5-Step Energy Action Plan
for Local Businesses & Organizations*
You can save money and realize other benefits by going green. Take the steps outlined below, and use the Comments function to share your experiences with others.
- Manage by objective. Collect energy bills, inventory energy use and its bottom-line impacts, and set reduction targets.
- Cut costs. Get a comprehensive energy audit, implement measures with timely payback, and adopt aggressive reduce-reuse-recycle programs.
- Save energy and support growth. Factor efficiency into purchasing decisions and patronize local businesses to keep more money in our economy.
- Be creative. Treat going green as an opportunity and offer green products and services to develop new revenue streams.
- Get involved. Support programs, policies, and institutions that make it easier for businesses and nonprofits to invest in energy efficiency and deploy renewable energy systems.
*This initial, qualitative plan is only a start. Eventually, a quantitative Cape & Islands Regional Energy Action Plan (REAP) for Businesses & Organizations is to be created consistent with the following long-term goals relating to energy independence, economic development, and climate change:
- Generate sufficient renewable energy in the Cape & Islands region to meet 100% of net electricity needs by 2020
- Reduce direct use of fossil fuels for heating and transport applications in the Cape & Islands region by 50% relative to 2006 consumption
These regional goals were established by representatives from businesses, environmental advocacy groups, regional and state agencies, business associations, educational and research institutions, and nonprofits participating in a “Beyond Cape Wind” visioning session organized through the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative.
