Green power is a worthy investment. Buying green products eliminates or offsets reliance on conventional “dirty” power and helps promote additional renewable energy development. Your purchases are tax-deductible, and they generate matching funds that your community can use to go green.
Cape and Vineyard consumers can take advantage of the Cape Light Compact Green and the NStar Green offerings. Nantucket consumers can patronize a National Grid GreenUp Provider. Everyone can invest in the New England Wind Fund.
NStar Green is unique, allowing you to purchase wind power generated by projects in upstate New York and, eventually, in northern Maine.
The Compact Green and GreenUp products are based on renewable energy certificates (RECs) from existing low-impact hydro, bioenergy, wind, and solar photovoltaic systems in New England. Consumers who buy REC-based products offset their purchases of conventionally generated power. The New England Wind Fund allows you to invest in a future wind project to be sited within the region, at a location to be determined.
Buying current green power products costs a few extra dollars a month, but it is one way to feel better about electricity. Using less juice and creating your own positive energy are even better options.
