State’s First Green Building
A green building teaches great lessons at Cape Cod Community College (CCCC). The Lyndon P. Lorusso Applied Technology Building opened in 2006 as the first LEED-certified public building constructed in Massachusetts.
The building is highly efficient in its energy and water use, and it relies on renewable sources where possible to meet on-site needs. Solar-powered shades are a notable exterior feature, with building-integrated photovoltaics turning light energy into electricity and the shade structure itself keeping heat out and letting light and heat in when appropriate. On the roof is a large-scale PV system, and a wind turbine is soon to go up nearby.
The Lorusso building’s green components are described in detail on the CCCC website, as are other elements in CCCC’s commitment to creating a sustainable campus. Tours are available on arrangement.
Energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other classes offered by the college in conjunction with the Cape & Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative are helping build a local clean energy cluster so that green building supports our economy. Browse the CCCC course catalog for information on upcoming classes.
