Going green means a lot more than conserving energy and supporting renewable energy - there are other important ways to practice resource efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, join the fight for independence, and reduce your carbon footprint. Visit the “Green Pages” to identify local retailers selling ecologically sound products.
Live local. Products sourced locally either grown, found, or made on the Cape, Vineyard, or
- Visit farmers’ markets and roadside stands
- Patronize locally owned businesses
- Ask restaurants where they get their food or fish
Go natural. Products derived from plants grown sustainably or animals treated humanely are ecologically sound in use, and they decompose naturally.
- Buy natural/organic food, cleaning fluids, fertilizers, etc.
Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Not consuming anything is a surefire approach to minimize environmental impacts, albeit an impractical one. A better idea is to think before you buy, buy only what you need, and minimize waste disposal.
- Rightsize purchases of big-ticket items - homes, vehicles, heating and air conditioning systems, appliances, etc.
- Buy products that can be reused - water bottles, coffee mugs, cloth napkins and shopping bags, etc.
- Buy products with recyclable packaging and avoid overpackaged products
- Purchase previously owned products and recycled goods
- Compost what you can
- Recycle everything you can
